Legal fees explained: what to ask before instructing a solicitor
Understanding the scope and cost of legal work helps you make informed decisions. Before instructing Harringtons LLP, discuss the work you need, any urgent deadline and the proposed arrangements for fees.
Will I be charged for an initial consultation?
Ask when booking whether a consultation fee applies, what it covers and whether VAT is included. A preliminary enquiry does not by itself confirm that the firm has accepted instructions or agreed to carry out work.
What written information should I receive?
The LSRA explains that clients are entitled to clear written information about legal costs. A costs notice should explain the services to be provided and the likely charges, or the basis on which charges will be calculated where an exact figure cannot yet be given.
Can a fixed fee be agreed?
Ask whether a fixed fee is suitable for the particular stage of your matter. Its scope should be clear: for example, an initial review may be separate from preparation for a hearing. Additional work and third-party charges should be discussed rather than assumed to be included.
What other costs should I ask about?
Clarify whether counsel, experts, court fees, VAT or other expenses are likely to arise. For litigation, ask about the potential exposure to another party’s costs. A successful outcome does not necessarily mean every expense will be recovered.
What if the work or estimated cost changes?
The LSRA states that a significant likely increase requires an updated costs notice. Ask questions about anything unclear before authorising further work.
Is legal aid available?
Funding depends on the matter and applicable scheme. Tell us about any existing legal-aid certificate. Eligibility and whether Harringtons can accept the particular instruction must be confirmed directly; this page does not promise availability.
