
Biography
Matthew Sweeney joined Phelim O’Neill Solicitors as a Legal Executive and is a valued member of the team, known for his diligence, academic excellence, and commitment to pursuing a career in law. A graduate of Maynooth University, Matthew holds a Bachelor of Civil Law degree in Law and English, as well as a Master’s in International Business Law, awarded jointly through an international dual degree programme.
As part of his LL.M, Matthew spent a semester studying at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France, where he earned a Master de Droit 1 and completed French language studies to B1 level. His master’s thesis, “An Analysis of the Judicial Selection Process in Ireland,” received a First Class Honours grade, reflecting his strong analytical ability and academic rigour.
Matthew has successfully completed all eight entrance examinations (FE-1s) required by the Law Society of Ireland and intends to train as a solicitor. He brings a broad perspective to legal practice, informed by both his academic background and practical experience across a range of sectors, including hospitality, retail, and healthcare.
His current role includes legal research, client support, file and case management, and assisting with case preparation across a wide spectrum of legal matters. A dedicated and hard-working team member, Matthew is driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to provide the highest standard of service to clients.
Experience
Matthew Sweeney has gained valuable hands-on experience in the preparation of serious criminal matters for trial in the Central Criminal Court. Working closely with senior solicitors and counsel, he has assisted in managing complex case files, organising exhibits, compiling briefs, and liaising with witnesses. He has also attended court with counsel in both the Central Criminal Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal, where he has observed high-level advocacy and the conduct of serious trials and appeals. This experience has deepened his understanding of criminal procedure and sharpened his ability to support clients and legal teams at every stage of the litigation process.
